When a car dealership experiences thriving business, there are typically two options for expansion: opening a new branch or expanding the existing location. Our client chose the latter for this project in order to enhance their service and expand their range of offerings.
The challenge
Our client faced the task of expanding their vehicle sales area without compromising the visibility and accessibility of the existing showroom.
The solution? Expanding upwards.
However, one central question remained: How can vehicles be efficiently and safely transported from street level to the newly created first floor?
Alternative 1: use of a ramp
At some car dealerships, ramps are used to overcome differences in elevation. Especially when vehicles need to be moved frequently between levels, using a ramp makes sense: cars can switch floors relatively easily without any waiting time due to lifting or lowering movements.
However, the large space requirement of a ramp can become a challenge. For instance, the maximum slope for an uncovered ramp in outdoor areas is 15%. In this case, the height difference to be overcome was five meters, meaning the required ramp would need to be at least 33 meters long. When you add the space needed for entering and exiting, it becomes clear that the end of the property is quickly reached.
Alternative 2: a car lift
To avoid occupying the entire property, our client decided against a ramp and opted for the installation of a freight elevator as a car lift. A shaftless model was chosen because it better fits the overall appearance of the car dealership.
Optimally equipped for outdoor use
The car lift shown in the photos is based on a double scissor lift table, which was specifically designed for outdoor use. Like all our lift tables for outdoor use, this car lift has been hot-dip galvanized and built to IP65 protection class standards to withstand adverse weather conditions.
No compromises on safety
The car lift is equipped with two electromechanically secured access doors that minimize the risk of falling from the platform or the upper stop. Additionally, the long sides of the scissor lift table are fitted with robust railings that provide further protection.
Unlockable check valves directly on the cylinders ensure that the platform of the car lift does not unintentionally fall in the event of possible leaks or hose failure, and remains safely at the designated height.
