Don’t break your back!

Back problems are one of the most common problems of our modern society, be it from sitting in the wrong position or from unergonomic work processes in production. At our customer, two points converged, which could be quickly eliminated with a simple scissor lift table ...

The point of departure

I have to admit, the introductory text was a bit confusing. Our customer's employees in production do not sit permanently. On the contrary, Our customer manufactures high-end office furniture and produces height-adjustable desks and office chairs that helps to ease the strain on our backs.
The production of the office chairs has not been very “back-friendly” thus far. Until now, the fully assembled chairs had to be lifted onto a trolley that was almost 1.5 m high. Certainly no problem with a single office chair, but not a pleasant activity in an 8-hour shift. This called for a modification.

A standard lift table with adjustments

During a personal on-site visit it quickly became clear that we could offer a simple and good solution for this problem. We basically use one of our standard lift tables, but with a few small but useful extras for everyday use.

The dimensions

Starting with the individual platform dimensions, we adapted the dimensions of the lift table exactly to those of the transport trolley being used. This allows the employees to place five office chairs on the platform and later transfer them 1 by 1 to the transport trolley .

The retracted height also played a decisive role. The employees work on a slightly raised platform to make removal from the production line as easy as possible. To make the transfer to the scissor lift table as easy as possible, the lift should of course not be too high, but maximum the height of the platform.

The surrounding edge

All office chairs have one thing in common: they have wheels. To allow safe transportation during the lifting motion, we have incorporated an almost 70-mm-high edge on one long side as a roll-stop . In turn, the two sides used to transfer the chairs are only 5 mm high. After all, we want to optimise the ergonomics and not create additional obstacles.

The transfer to the transport trolley

The office chairs can now be loaded onto the lift table in the bottom position. But you still need to get from them the lift table onto the transport trolley. The next step, which is not easy on the back, awaits at a height of 1.5 m.
To prevent this, the scissor lift table has a short ramp on one of the narrow sides. This can be folded over the surrounding edge of the trolley to rest on the transport surface. This allows the office chairs to be simply pushed over from the scissor lift table onto the transport trolley.
And even if another or a new transport trolley is used, this would not be a problem either. The lifting height can be quickly adjusted to a new transport trolley by means of a lifting limit switch that covers a wide range of adjustments.

This example shows that lifting work tables do not always have to be of a complicated design. It only requires a few simple adjustments to make the scissor lift table ready for the respective application and so make life much easier for employees.
