At Essen Sports Pool, water treatment products, spare parts and other operational supplies are regularly delivered on pallets. To transport these loads safely and efficiently to the plant room in the basement, JANZEN Lifttechnik installed a custom-designed column lift with a load capacity of 750 kg – without the need for a lift pit.
The Challenge
For water treatment purposes, 20-litre chlorine containers are delivered on a regular basis. The containers arrive on Euro pallets and are transported using a pallet truck. In addition, spare parts, tools and technical equipment must be moved reliably to the basement plant room.
The main challenge was that access to the technical area is only possible from the outside of the building. At the same time, the lifting solution had to withstand outdoor weather conditions while blending seamlessly into the appearance of the swimming facility. Due to the existing structural constraints, a conventional freight elevator with a lift pit could not be installed.
The Solution: A Column Lift Without the Need for a Pit
JANZEN Lifttechnik manufactured a compact column lift as a simplified goods lift with a load capacity of 750 kg. The system connects the outdoor area with the basement plant room and provides safe transportation of chlorine containers, spare parts and other operational supplies.
Thanks to an access ramp, the platform can be loaded directly with a pallet truck without the need for a pit. The through-loading design minimizes manoeuvring and enables a fast and ergonomic material flow. Pallets can be loaded directly, transported to the destination level and unloaded on the opposite side.
Custom Design for Outdoor Installation
As the system was installed entirely outdoors, both the column lift and the shaft structure were hot-dip galvanized. This provides long-term protection against corrosion and ensures a long service life even under demanding weather conditions.
For additional protection, the installation was equipped with a fully enclosed housing made of sandwich panels. At the same time, the enclosure allows the goods lift to blend harmoniously into the existing surroundings of the swimming facility.
To ensure the safe transport of high-stacked pallets, the platform was also fitted with extended safety railings.
Safe and Reliable Daily Operation
The safety of personnel and equipment is a top priority. All landing doors and platform gates are electromechanically interlocked and can only be opened once the platform has reached its designated position.
Additional standard safety features include:
- Emergency guide blocks
- Four suspension ropes, each rated for the full nominal load
- Electric locking valves mounted directly on the hydraulic cylinders
- Safety lowering valves to protect against potential hydraulic line failure
In addition, the lift is operated with biodegradable hydraulic oil. This supports environmentally friendly operation and is particularly suitable for sensitive environments such as public swimming pools.
The Result
Since its commissioning in 2016, the column lift has provided safe and efficient material transport between the delivery area and the basement plant room. Euro pallets can be moved directly onto the platform using a pallet truck, eliminating time-consuming and physically demanding transport routes.
The system combines high durability with minimal structural modifications and unobtrusive integration into the existing surroundings. This project demonstrates how an economical and practical solution for the regular transport of heavy loads can be achieved even under challenging conditions.
