When do I need an explosion-proof scissor lift table?

A variety of different manufacturing processes lead to an atmosphere at risk of explosion. One of the most common processes prone to explosion is likely the painting of components. To guarantee optimal application of paint onto the component, a fine spray mist is necessary. This fine mist can be ignited by a spark and trigger a dust explosion.

With simple scissor lift tables, there are several components that can generate these critical sparks: from mechanical components coming into contact with each other (e.g., roller bearings against end stops) to the entire control system of the lift table (e.g., the switching spark when pressing a button).
Therefore, conventional scissor lift tables without special equipment are not permitted to be used in areas of potentially explosive atmospheres.

What distinguishes ATEX scissor lift tables from conventional lift tables?

For scissor lift tables intended for potentially explosive atmospheres, we implement a series of measures to ensure explosion protection. All safety measures aim to prevent the occurrence of critical sparks.

For instance, we use position switches for the toe protection safety strips and as end position sensors, which comply with the requirements of the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and are approved for at least zones 1 and 21. Additionally, we ensure that metallic components do not collide and share the same electrical potential.

Another special feature is the documentation of these records. All construction-relevant documents (from calculations to drawings) are archived independently of the lift table manufacturer. For example, we collaborate with DEKRA and keep all records for a minimum of 10 years.

What about the hydraulic unit?

Explosion-proof hydraulic units are rare and therefore expensive to procure.

To achieve the optimal cost-performance ratio, we leverage one of the major advantages of hydraulic lift tables: we separate the unit from the actual lift table and place the drive unit outside the area of potentially explosive atmosphere.
This allows us to use a standard hydraulic unit. Often, simply relocating the unit to another level or outside the work area is sufficient.

What are the different zones for potentially explosive atmospheres?

Areas at risk of explosion are classified based on the frequency and duration of the occurrence of potentially explosive atmospheres, with a further distinction between dust on one side and gases, vapors, and mists on the other:

Frequency of HazardDustGases
Continuous risk of explosion
(more than 50% of the operating time)
zone 20zone 0
Occasional risk of explosion
(e.g., daily, but less than 50% of the operating time)
zone 21zone 1
Normally no risk of explosion,
and if so, only briefly
zone 22zone 2

Different requirements for the protection measures of the lift table arise for the various zones. For example, we offer scissor lift tables for zone 2 and 22.

Who determines which Ex zone is present?

The zone declaration is either made by the plant manufacturer (e.g., the manufacturer of the paint booth) or the operator.

Therefore, we cannot determine the Ex zone ourselves and require the relevant information during the enquiry stage. The declaration specifies which sensors need to be installed or what maximum surface temperatures are allowed within the hazardous area.

Frequently asked questions & our answers ...

Where is the headquarters of Janzen Lifttechnik GmbH?

We are at home in the beautiful Emsland, more precisely in Niederlangen a member community of the joint community Lathen directly on the A31 motorway. This means that we are roughly halfway between North Rhine-Westphalia and the North Sea, right on the Dutch border.

Our region is known, among other things, for the various nature reserves, the well-developed cycle paths, the manufacture of cruise ships, as well as the headquarters of various distilleries.
Should you ever come to our region, we look forward to a visit in our plant.

Where are the lift tables and lifts produced?

With us, not only does the final assembly take place in Germany, but we also cover the entire production chain from construction through steel construction to final assembly in our plant in Niederlangen. With us you get a real 'Made in Germany'.

Is the offer aimed only at traders or also at private individuals?

Even if our products are mainly used in an industrial environment, we naturally also offer them to private individuals.
Just give us a call or send us an enquiry and we will be happy to contact you.

Will I receive a drawing before production starts?

In any case. To ensure that you get the product that you really want, we provide you with an approval drawing before production begins. In addition to the actual product, this also includes the installation situation. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Can I get a CAD model?

After ordering and the design phase, we are pleased to provide you with CAD models. Data exchange is possible in all common formats, including .stp, .dxf, .dwg, etc.

Where can delivery of the products be made?

We produce our lift tables and column lifts in accordance with European standards and guidelines. Accordingly, our sales area is limited to all countries that recognize these standards and guidelines (e.g. the members of the European Union, Switzerland and Australia).

For which countries is the assembly service available?

On request, we assemble our systems throughout Germany, as well as in the neighboring countries of Germany.

Do you need an advice?

The possible uses of scissor lift tables are just as diverse as their equipment variants. On the one hand, this variety of variants is nice, on the other hand, it naturally makes it difficult to correctly select the right lifting table.
