In many apartment buildings, waste storage rooms are located in the basement. For every collection, heavy waste containers must be transported from the basement to the outdoor collection area – a physically demanding and time-consuming task. To address this challenge, Janzen Lifttechnik developed a custom underground lift for a housing association.
The challenge: Safely transporting waste containers between the basement and the parking area
In this project, 1,100-litre waste containers must be transported regularly from the waste storage room in the basement to the parking area. This requires overcoming a height difference of 2.55 metres.
The goal was to develop a solution that would allow a single person to move the heavy containers safely and with minimal physical effort. As the upper landing is located outdoors, the lift also had to be designed for long-term weather resistance and robust operation.
The solution: An underground lift based on a double scissor lift table
The solution was an underground lift based on a double scissor lift table. This design is particularly well suited for the safe transport of heavy loads between two levels.
Another key advantage of the double scissor lift table is its design: the required structural rigidity is provided by the scissor mechanism itself. As a result, no additional guide rails are required inside the lift shaft, reducing construction effort and simplifying shaft design.
How the underground lift works in everyday operation
The building caretaker rolls the 1,100-litre waste container directly from the waste storage room onto the platform of the underground lift. At the push of a button, the lift travels to the upper landing at the parking area. From there, the container can be wheeled directly to the designated collection point for waste collection.
After being emptied, the container is returned to the waste storage room using the same route. The lift is intentionally designed for simple operation, allowing the entire process to be carried out safely and efficiently by a single person.
The result: Ergonomic workflows and uncluttered outdoor areas
The underground lift enables the safe and convenient transport of 1,100-litre waste containers between the basement and the parking area. A single person can complete the entire transport process with minimal physical effort.
Between collections, the waste containers remain stored in the basement. This keeps the outdoor areas free of containers and helps maintain a clean and well-kept appearance throughout the residential complex.
