Work flexibly wherever assembly takes place: For an international automotive supplier, we developed a mobile work platform for two operators. It can be easily moved between different locations within the production area, enabling ergonomic working at the required height.
The Challenge: Working at Height at Changing Assembly Stations
At our customer’s facility, work at height is carried out on different components and at various stations throughout the production hall. A permanently installed work platform would have limited the flexibility required within the manufacturing process.
The customer therefore needed an elevating work platform that employees could move to the respective assembly station within the hall and adjust to the required working height.
The platform had to provide sufficient space for two employees, as well as the necessary tools and assembly materials. At the same time, the solution needed to integrate seamlessly into the existing production environment. In addition to mobility and an adjustable working height, ensuring the safety of both employees on the platform and personnel in the immediate surrounding area was therefore a key priority.
The Solution: A Mobile Work Platform with Adjustable Working Height
Based on these requirements, we developed a customized industrial work platform featuring a 2,500 × 1,500 mm platform and a load capacity of 1,000 kg.
The lifting range of 520 to 1,500 mm allows the platform height to be adjusted to suit different components and assembly tasks. This provides employees with an elevated workspace that can be configured to the required height at various assembly stations.
To allow the platform to be moved between work areas, it is equipped with a chassis featuring fixed and swivel polyamide castors. On the smooth production floor, the work platform can therefore be moved to the next assembly station without the need for additional lifting or transport equipment.
The platform is accessed via a ladder at one of the narrow ends. On one of the long sides, the guardrail sections are removable, allowing the industrial work platform to be adapted to the specific requirements of each assembly task.
Power is supplied via a cable with a 16 A CEE plug. For applications where a cable-based power supply is not desired, the work platform can alternatively be equipped with a battery-powered system.
Safety for Operators and the Production Environment
In addition to flexible operation, use within an active production environment required an appropriate safety concept.
The access gate to the platform is electrically monitored. Lifting is only possible when the gate is fully closed.
During raising and lowering, PVC roller blinds on three sides shield the area beneath the platform. This safeguards the hazardous area underneath the raised work platform from the immediate production environment.
An emergency stop button is also located on the base frame, allowing the platform movement to be stopped immediately from floor level if necessary.
An audible warning signal is activated during raising and lowering, alerting nearby personnel to the movement of the work platform.
The Result: One Industrial Work Platform for Multiple Work Areas
The industrial work platform has been in use at the customer’s facility since 2019. Instead of providing separate stationary work platforms for different components, the platform can be used at multiple assembly stations.
This provides the customer with three key benefits:
- Flexible use: The industrial work platform can be positioned wherever it is needed within the production area for the respective assembly task.
- Adjustable working height: The lifting range allows the platform height to be adapted to different components and working situations.
- Comprehensive safety concept: The monitored access gate, guardrails, protection beneath the platform, emergency stop and audible warning signal help protect both employees on the platform and personnel in the surrounding work area.
This means the industrial work platform follows the production process – rather than the production process having to adapt to a permanently installed workstation.
