For a manufacturer of large motors, we developed stationary work platforms that can be flexibly adapted to the respective assembly area. Stairs that move with the platform provide safe access even when the platform is raised.
The Challenge: Ergonomic Working Height for Large Motor Assembly
When assembling large motors, technicians spend extended periods working on large components. Depending on the assembly step, their working position around the motor changes.
Previously, the customer used fixed work platforms. The problem was that the platform height remained unchanged. As a result, some assembly tasks had to be performed in bent or awkward working positions.
A solution was therefore needed that reversed this principle: instead of the technician having to adapt to a fixed platform height, the workstation needed to adapt to the specific assembly task.
At the same time, the work platform needed to provide safe access and exit even when raised.
The Solution: Height-Adjustable Work Platforms
For this application, we developed two stationary work platforms positioned on either side of the large motor. Both platforms can be adjusted independently and set to the appropriate working height for each assembly area.
The 4,000 × 800 mm platform provides the technician with sufficient space to move and place tools or components. With a lifting range of 400 mm, the working height can be precisely adjusted to suit the respective assembly task.
This creates a height-adjustable assembly workstation that can be flexibly adapted to different tasks on the large motor.
The Special Feature: Stairs That Move with the Platform at Any Height
Each work platform is equipped with stairs at both narrow ends that move together with the platform and automatically adapt to its position.
For the technicians, this means that the work platform remains directly accessible even when raised.
For example, if tools or materials are needed, the platform does not have to be lowered to floor level and then raised back to the previous working height. The selected position is maintained, avoiding unnecessary lifting movements.
The Result: Two Platforms Prove Successful – Six More Follow
The stationary work platforms allow the working height to be adjusted to suit each assembly task, helping to reduce awkward working postures. At the same time, the stairs that move with the platforms ensure direct access even when the platforms are raised.
The continued cooperation demonstrates the success of the concept in day-to-day production: after the first two work platforms, the large motor manufacturer ordered six additional units.
Today, a total of eight work platforms are in use for large motor assembly.
