Dock Lift Table for Safe Goods Handling at a Hospital

A safe and robust solution was required for the hospital’s central delivery area to reliably bridge different height levels and support the daily flow of goods.
Janzen Lifttechnik provided a custom-designed dock lift table featuring PIN-protected operation, enclosed platform guardrails and a configuration tailored to the requirements of hospital operations.

The Challenge: Safe Loading at a Key Interface in Hospital Logistics

The delivery area plays an important role in the hospital’s daily supply operations. A large proportion of the hospital’s goods deliveries pass through this area. Disruptions or equipment failures at this key interface can therefore have a direct impact on internal supply processes.

At the same time, delivery traffic and hospital staff regularly come together in this area, resulting in a high level of pedestrian traffic.

This created clear requirements for the new loading solution: it needed to reliably bridge different height levels, be designed for regular operation and, at the same time, provide a high level of personnel safety.

Another key requirement was access control. Freely accessible operation of the lifting equipment was not an option in this environment. Only authorized personnel were to be able to operate the dock lift table.

The installation location also placed specific demands on the design. Although the lift table is installed in a covered area, it is exposed to moisture and changing temperatures. Corrosion protection and a durable, robust design were therefore also important aspects of the planning process.

The objective was therefore to provide a dock lift table that combines operational reliability, access control, personnel safety and durability in a single solution.

The Solution: Custom-Designed Dock Lift Table

Janzen Lifttechnik developed a custom-designed dock lift table for the delivery area, with a platform size of 2,600 × 1,500 mm and a load capacity of 2,000 kg.

The lift table bridges the different height levels in the delivery area, providing a reliable interface for the daily flow of goods.

The platform and base frame are hot-dip galvanized, providing durable corrosion protection for use in a covered outdoor area.

The safety concept was a key focus of the design.

Controlled Access via Stainless Steel Control Column with PIN

At the upper stop, a stainless steel control column with PIN entry is installed. Before the dock lift table can be used, operating personnel must enter the appropriate code to gain authorization. Once the correct PIN has been entered, the controls are enabled for 15 minutes. After this period, access is automatically disabled, preventing the lift table from remaining freely operable.

In addition, the system can be completely deactivated using a key – for example, outside the designated operating hours or during maintenance work.

Particularly in a busy delivery area, this combination ensures that operation remains restricted to authorized personnel.

Personnel Safety in a Busy Delivery Area

In addition to access control, safety during the actual loading and unloading process was a key consideration.

An enclosed platform guardrail, approximately 1,700 mm high, secures the working area on the platform and protects personnel during loading and unloading.

An audible warning signal also sounds whenever the lift table is raised or lowered, alerting people in the immediate vicinity to the movement of the platform.

This combination of physical safeguards and active warnings is particularly important in a hospital environment, where staff from other departments may also pass through the delivery area alongside logistics personnel.

Robust Design for Long-Term Operation

The choice of materials was also tailored to the conditions at the installation site. The platform and base frame are hot-dip galvanized to provide long-lasting corrosion protection.

Biodegradable hydraulic oil is also used as the hydraulic fluid, helping to reduce potential environmental impact in the event of an accidental oil leak.

The Result: Safe and Reliable Goods Flow at a Key Interface

With the new dock lift table, the hospital now has a robust solution with controlled access for a key area of its supply logistics.

PIN-protected operation restricts use to authorized personnel, while the enclosed platform guardrails and audible warning signal enhance safety in the busy delivery area. The hot-dip galvanized design is also engineered for long-term use in a covered outdoor environment.

The project demonstrates how height compensation, access control, personnel safety and durability can be combined in a custom-designed loading solution – ensuring a safe and reliable flow of goods in day-to-day hospital operations.
